New York State Reports First Measles Fatality in Over Three Decades Amid Ongoing Outbreak
A child's death in Lewis County marks a tragic milestone, prompting renewed calls for vaccination amidst a statewide measles emergency.

Officials in New York state recently announced the tragic death of a child in Lewis County, marking the state's first confirmed measles-associated fatality in over three decades. This somber event occurs amidst a persistent measles outbreak affecting various regions.
Governor Kathy Hochul conveyed her profound sorrow upon learning of the child's passing.
As a mother and grandmother, I cannot imagine what this family is going through. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved this child. Measles is highly contagious, and vaccination remains our best protection against this dangerous disease. This is New York’s first measles-related death in 30 years, a devastating reminder of what’s at stake when Washington deliberately erodes decades of progress in protecting Americans from preventable illnesses. In New York, we will continue to stand by proven public health measures and do everything we can to keep New Yorkers safe and healthy.
Previously, the Trump administration implemented alterations to federal vaccine policy, which involved adjustments to the recommended childhood immunization schedule and a review of vaccine recommendation processes. Despite these changes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) consistently advises two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine for children, emphasizing that this regimen offers optimal protection against measles.
State Response and Public Health Measures
This tragic loss follows Governor Hochul's declaration of a State Disaster Emergency four weeks prior, enacted in response to the spreading measles outbreak affecting parts of New York and adjacent states. The emergency declaration aimed to broaden the scope of individuals qualified to administer measles vaccines and facilitate swift access to supplementary resources as necessary.
Last month, the governor indicated her intention to seek federal aid to help control the outbreak.
Ongoing Outbreak and Official Guidance
The New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) has affirmed its collaboration with county health departments and local organizations. Their collective efforts are focused on making the MMR vaccine available to unvaccinated individuals upon request, alongside diligent monitoring and investigation of all reported measles cases.
By October 24, the state had documented a total of 178 measles cases for the year, with 170 reported outside New York City and eight within the city limits.
State health authorities strongly advised New Yorkers to safeguard themselves by ensuring their MMR vaccinations are current. They also recommended vigilance regarding health advisories, particularly when traveling with unvaccinated individuals, especially young children.
In a statement, the NYS DOH conveyed profound sorrow:
We are deeply saddened by the death of a child in Lewis County associated with the ongoing measles outbreak. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the child's family and loved ones and ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.
The department reiterated that measles is a highly contagious illness capable of leading to severe complications and even death, emphasizing that vaccination remains the "best protection against measles."
The statement from the department concluded by detailing their support:
The Department has offered resources to Lewis County to assist with community outreach and support local vaccination efforts – both in response to this case, and as part of our ongoing efforts to support counties that are facing this ongoing measles outbreak. We urge New Yorkers to ensure they are up-to-date on measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccinations and speak to their healthcare provider about immunizations.
