Ukraine President Zelenskyy Cautions Russia Plans 'Massive Attack' Amid US Midterm Elections

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautioned on Monday that Russia is orchestrating a “massive attack” on Ukraine, strategically timed to coincide with Tuesday’s midterm elections in the United States. President Zelenskyy accused Moscow of intending to leverage the significant American vote to launch strikes while international focus is directed elsewhere.

This alert from the Ukrainian leader emerged as American voters prepared to cast ballots that would determine control of Congress, an outcome that could significantly shape Washington’s future responses to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s nearly five-year conflict in Ukraine.

Writing on X, President Zelenskyy further implored the United States to intensify its stance against Moscow, warning that Russia could capitalize on the elections to target Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure and supply routes. He specifically referenced the “Trump administration” in his appeal for increased pressure.

Zelenskyy Warns of Impending Strikes

“We have intel that Russia is preparing a new massive attack on our country – primarily targeting energy and logistics,” President Zelenskyy announced in his nightly address.

He elaborated on the presumed strategy, stating, “The assumption is basically that tomorrow the world will be watching the American midterms, and what is happening here in Ukraine, along with our difficulties with air defense and Patriot missiles, will be overlooked.”

President Zelenskyy’s warning followed hours after Russian forces reportedly struck a school in Komyshuvakha, a settlement in southeastern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, which was being utilized for humanitarian aid distribution. According to the Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda, this incident resulted in the deaths of at least 26 individuals, including police officers and first responders. Five others sustained injuries, and several more remained unaccounted for.

Calls for Stronger Economic Measures

In his X post, President Zelenskyy urged the U.S. and its allies to send a clear message to President Putin: continued aggression against Ukraine would incur severe economic repercussions.

“We need signals from the world to Russia that will make them feel that terror is no good, that it will bring no gains, and that as long as this war continues, their oil will burn, and they will not be able to make money doing business with the world,” President Zelenskyy warned.

He emphasized the necessity of stringent economic action, adding, “We must not play games with Russia's oil or gas revenues. We must put pressure on Russia in such a way that it has no alternative but to end this war. America can do this.”

Separately, former President Donald Trump has reportedly pursued diplomatic avenues to conclude the conflict, with assistance from special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, both of whom have been engaged in discussions related to Moscow.

In a related development, the State Department approved the potential sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 interceptor missiles to Ukraine, valued at an estimated $2.1 billion, as reported by Reuters. This proposed sale, if finalized, could significantly bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities, though the timeline for delivery remains uncertain.

Accusations of Ceasefire Violation

On Monday, Ukraine also accused Moscow of exploiting a U.S.-supported humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky, located in Ukraine's southern Kherson region, to reinforce Russian military positions. During the six-day humanitarian pause, nearly 800 people were evacuated. The White House clarified that former First Lady Melania Trump played a role in brokering this arrangement.

Ukraine's General Staff alleged that Russian forces used the humanitarian window to rotate troops, strengthen their defensive lines, and improve battlefield logistics.

“Under the ceasefire introduced for the humanitarian operation in Oleshky, units of the Defence Forces of Ukraine ensured that the ceasefire was observed and acted exclusively within the framework of the agreements reached,” the General Staff stated on X. “The enemy, by contrast, used the humanitarian pause to improve its positions.”
