President Trump Employed Decoy Aircraft, Catering Truck for Covert Departure Amid Iran Threat
During a NATO summit in Turkey, then-President Donald Trump reportedly used an elaborate ruse involving a smaller military jet and a catering vehicle to secretly depart, countering a specific Iranian threat.

Reports indicate that former President Donald Trump executed a clandestine departure from a NATO summit in Turkey in July, utilizing a smaller U.S. military aircraft and an airport catering truck for concealment, while an older Air Force One jet served as a diversion. This elaborate security operation, which unfolded at Ankara airport, was reportedly a response to a credible threat from Iran targeting the president. Mr. Trump had arrived in the Turkish capital on July 8, having traveled on a new Boeing 747-8, a plane gifted by Qatar.
The Elaborate Deception
Earlier that summer, after American military forces conducted strikes against Iranian positions, intelligence assessments revealed a direct threat from Iran aimed at the president's itinerary. In response, U.S. security personnel devised and implemented a sophisticated deception on the tarmac at the Turkish airport.
President Trump was observed ascending the steps of the traditional blue-and-white Boeing 747, often referred to as the older Air Force One, where he waved to assembled journalists before entering the aircraft. Moments afterward, sources suggest that Mr. Trump and a small contingent of his staff discreetly exited the plane through a rear door, boarding an airport catering truck that had been elevated to meet the exit. The vehicle then descended to the ground and traversed the airfield to a waiting Air Force C-32A, a modified Boeing 757.
Airborne Ruse and Subsequent Transfer
Concurrently, members of the press and White House personnel boarded the larger 747, under the impression that the president was on board. Journalists were subsequently instructed to lower their window shades for departure. The aircraft then took off, serving as the intended decoy.
Flight-tracking information indicated that this legacy jet initially registered on radar without a call sign, only to adopt the 'AF1' designation mid-flight, despite the president's absence. President Trump, meanwhile, traveled covertly on the smaller C-32A to RAF Mildenhall in England, arriving a short time before the decoy aircraft.
The precise method by which Mr. Trump transitioned from the C-32A to the older Air Force One after landing in the United Kingdom remains unconfirmed. However, a media pool report noted his appearance before television cameras at approximately 10:56 p.m., descending the external stairs of the legacy aircraft. Around 11:01 p.m., President Trump boarded the newer, Qatari-donated Boeing 747-8 for his return journey to Washington. Both staff and reporters also transferred from the legacy plane prior to its departure.
President's Remarks on Threats
When questioned by reporters about the instruction to lower window shades during departure from Turkey, President Trump responded,
You're probably on a dangerous flight because of the sleaze bags that we have to deal with.He further stated that he constantly confronts threats and is considered 'Number One' on Iran's list of targets. Separately, the U.S. Air Force highlighted the enhanced safety features of the new Air Force One aircraft.
