Trumpeter Jesse McGuire Delivers Unforgettable National Anthem Performance After Instrument Malfunction
During a celebration marking the Arizona Diamondbacks' 2001 World Series victory, renowned trumpeter Dr. Jesse McGuire demonstrated remarkable composure when his instrument failed mid-performance.

Renowned trumpeter Dr. Jesse McGuire, celebrated for his role as a good-luck charm during the Arizona Diamondbacks' 2001 World Series championship run, once again graced the field to perform the national anthem. His appearance marked the 25th anniversary of the team's historic Fall Classic victory, a triumph that notably included a decisive Game 7 walk-off win against the New York Yankees. Coincidentally, the Diamondbacks' current series, where McGuire performed, was also scheduled against the Yankees.
McGuire's significant contributions to the team's 2001 lore in Arizona were even recognized with his own World Series ring.
However, during his rendition on Saturday, before a sold-out crowd at Chase Field gathered to celebrate the anniversary and watch the D-Backs compete against the Yankees, McGuire's trumpet began to experience technical difficulties. The performance quickly diverged from the smooth, resonant sound McGuire was known for, as his equipment proved problematic. After attempting to rectify the issue early in "The Star-Spangled Banner" and realizing it wouldn't resolve, he responded with remarkable adaptability. McGuire put down his instrument and sang the remainder of the anthem.
Adapting Under Pressure
The 68-year-old musician, who previously served as lead trumpeter for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in New York City and has performed the anthem for three U.S. presidents, seamlessly transitioned to the microphone. He picked up the lyrics precisely where he had left off, captivating the audience. The crowd offered a brief cheer before falling silent again, showing reverence for the national symbol as McGuire continued to display his powerful vocal range before the assembled throng.
As McGuire reached the anthem's crescendo, a large American flag unfurled and waved gracefully in the outfield. This created a poignant and beautiful spectacle before the first pitch, a moment that had moments earlier seemed on the verge of unraveling.
Despite the initial technical setback with his trumpet, McGuire ultimately had no reason for dissatisfaction. His impromptu vocal performance garnered a resounding standing ovation from the crowd, recognizing his talent and resilience.
Even Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was quick to acknowledge McGuire, offering commendation for his swift and patriotic improvisation as he exited the field.
McGuire's presence at the game extended beyond the national anthem; he returned in the seventh inning to perform "God Bless America," once again opting to sing the patriotic tune.
A Night of Walk-Off Drama
The evening's drama wasn't confined to the pre-game ceremony. Much like the iconic 2001 World Series Game 7, when Luis Gonzalez famously hit a bloop single off Hall of Fame Yankees closer Mariano Rivera to secure the championship, the Diamondbacks once again achieved a walk-off victory against the Yankees. This time, Pavin Smith delivered a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, keeping the team's postseason aspirations alive and capping an unforgettable night.
