Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville, alongside his podcast co-host Al Hunt, recently expressed profound concern over the emergence of certain candidates within the Democratic Party, advocating for a formal division. Their discussion on a recent episode of "Politics War Room" centered on the victories of several progressive hopefuls in New York primary elections, particularly highlighting Darializa Avila Chevalier, one of three candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Hunt suggested that the success of these candidates could "complicate the politically existential question of winning in November," implying a potential hindrance to the party's broader electoral goals. While both Carville and Hunt acknowledged that Republican strategists might be exaggerating the influence of these three candidates as representative of the Democratic Party's overall direction, they nonetheless called for clear boundaries to be established.
Calls for a Democratic Party Schism
Citing reporting from The New York Times, Carville vocalized his strong disapproval of Chevalier's stated positions. "I have the quote right here, I’ll get to it. She has attacked interracial relationships and the American flag. Lady, I ain't in the same party as you. I'm sorry," Carville asserted. "I’m just not, and I actually do think it's time for Democrats to talk ‘the S-word.’ ‘Schism.’ I really do."
"Everybody's always said, 'No, no, we're coalition. We're a big tent,’" he continued. "And there's some – there's just some s--- that I can't be in the same tent with."
Carville suggested that many contemporary far-left candidates do not genuinely align with the Democratic Party's core tenets, despite running under its banner. He proposed a negotiation for "terms of a schism," suggesting a separation could occur "under some kind of advantageous terms for both of us, but I'm done. And I'm not in that f---ing political party."
Elaborating on his stance, Carville clarified his views on foreign policy. "I am totally comfortable in a political party that spends time questioning the policies of the government of Israel. In fact, I'm enthusiastic about that," he stated. "I don't want to be in a political party that denies the right of the state of Israel to exist. That's just not — I just can't do that. I'm sorry. It's just not doable."
Impact on November Elections and Party Unity
Al Hunt echoed Carville's concerns, describing the rise of such candidates as "a great gift to Donald Trump." He suggested that prominent Democrats, including figures like former President Obama and younger party members, should publicly disavow these extreme views by stating, "This is not us."
Hunt also warned of potential internal strife if Democrats fail to secure a decisive victory in the upcoming November elections. He cautioned that "that group of crazies" could "just sabotage Hakeem Jeffries every step of the way" in his leadership role.
Drawing a comparison, Hunt acknowledged that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., initially caused some friction within the party early in her career but ultimately evolved into a productive member. However, he expressed skepticism about the potential of this new cohort, stating, "I don't think this group has that potential." Carville concurred with Hunt’s assessment, adding, "I don't either. And I think AOC is smart. I could be in the same party with her in many ways. I can't be in the same party with Miss Chevalier. Can't do it. Sorry."
