Jack Antonoff Rebukes Ed Sheeran for Macklemore Removal, Citing 'Massive' Missed Opportunity

Grammy-winning producer Jack Antonoff has voiced strong criticism against Ed Sheeran, stating that the English singer squandered a significant opportunity to challenge the influence of powerful financial stakeholders. Antonoff's remarks came after Sheeran reportedly removed rapper Macklemore from his tour following Macklemore's comments on the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Antonoff, known as the lead singer of Bleachers and a prolific producer behind many of Taylor Swift's chart-topping songs, delivered his sharp condemnation in a recent interview. This interview took place over a month after Sheeran faced public scrutiny for Macklemore's exclusion from the Loop Tour, which occurred after the rapper advocated for "Free Palestine" during his opening set.

"If you think it is [controversial] you’re lost in some other sauce that is so crazy. They’re going to let some f---ing promoter tell me what I can say? Don’t book me. I’ll play for free outside," Antonoff declared to the publication.

The Tour Controversy Unfolds

Reports indicated that New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was among a group of NFL team owners who allegedly threatened to prevent Sheeran's stadium performances if Macklemore remained part of the lineup.

Antonoff contended that Sheeran should have opted to cancel the entire tour and instead performed free concerts outside the scheduled venues. This, he argued, would have been a principled stand against the demands of billionaires.

"[Ed Sheeran] missed a massive, beautiful opportunity there: just cancel the whole f---ing tour, then play for free outside each venue, raise a bunch of money, rather than let a f---ing billionaire tell you what to do," Antonoff stated. "The reason it’s not an anomaly or niche issue is because we all live in a world where billionaires are constantly telling us what to do. So stand the f--- up."

Sheeran addressed the controversy during a tour stop in Philadelphia, partially remarking: "What happened in Israel and at the Nova Music Festival on Oct. 7 was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain. What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate."

In a show of solidarity with Macklemore, several other artists who were slated to open for Sheeran, including Finneas, Aaron Rowe, and Lukas Graham, subsequently withdrew from the tour. Macklemore has since reinforced his message, embarking on a "Free Palestine Tour."

Artistic Expression and Solidarity

Antonoff, a Jewish artist who has also expressed support for a "free Palestine," commended Macklemore for speaking out. He noted that he personally feels "way more emboldened to say it now."

"It’s not in any way a strange, uncomfortable or controversial thing to say, it’s a deeply human thing to say," the producer affirmed.

A Contrasting Viewpoint Emerges

However, a commentator identified as Toto offered a different perspective on Antonoff's remarks, suggesting a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding both Middle East politics and the music industry's business realities. Toto questioned the practical implications of Antonoff's suggestion, asking: "If Sheeran scrapped his tour, how many workers would lose their jobs? And, if he did an alternative tour, how would they get paid?"

Toto further posited that Antonoff's blanket criticism of billionaires and his support for "Free Palestine" might be a strategic move. "He knows it's acceptable within his industry to blanketly bash billionaires, a lazy, thoughtless attack and do a variation of ‘Free Palestine,'" Toto continued. "He's trying to curry favor within his industry. Sadly, it might just work."
