Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat representing Pennsylvania, characterized Graham Platner as a "dead man walking" after the controversy-ridden Democratic hopeful withdrew from the U.S. Senate contest in Maine, prompted by a recent rape allegation.
"The trash took itself out tonight. And now, finally, people in Maine have a chance to really vote on someone that's not a total piece of trash," Fetterman stated during an interview on Wednesday evening.
He continued, asserting that Platner "will only be remembered as the accused rapist that got pushed out of your election. That's your legacy, bro. And you are a guy that cheats on your wife. You're the guy that roughs up your ex-girlfriend."
Platner's campaign for the Maine Senate seat concluded on Wednesday, following a series of escalating scandals, including accusations of sexual misconduct and domestic abuse.
His departure was announced in an 11-minute video posted online Wednesday evening, where he labeled the rape allegation from a former partner as "false." It is important to note that Platner has not faced criminal charges related to this particular accusation.
"To give that weird long speech and pretend like people will miss you?" Fetterman questioned. "No one's going to forget you other than [as] the guy that was pushed out of the election because a woman credibly accused you of raping her. So that's his legacy."
The senator further remarked, "No one wants you anymore. I'm like, bro, you are an accused rapist. Adios, trash bag."
A Campaign Riddled with Controversy
Platner, a military veteran and oyster farmer, spent much of his time on the campaign trail defending himself against numerous controversies that plagued his candidacy. These included a chest tattoo that drew comparisons to a Nazi symbol and allegations of abuse from former romantic partners.
The specific allegation that ultimately led to Platner's withdrawal came from Jenny Racicot, a 41-year-old resident of Maine. Racicot informed a prominent news outlet that, "by dictionary definition," Platner "raped" her.
Racicot alleged that Platner entered her residence without invitation and forced her to engage in unprotected sexual intercourse, despite her repeated pleas for him to stop.
This accusation marked the latest in a string of contentious issues that had consistently shadowed Platner's political aspirations.
"He's always been a dead man walking," Fetterman reiterated.
Criticism for Endorsing Democrats
Fetterman also directed sharp criticism at his progressive colleagues, singling out Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont, who had endorsed Platner in the Maine Senate race. Fetterman suggested that these endorsing figures owe an apology to the voters.
"What did [Democrats] see in this guy? Was it the Nazi tattoo, was it the gross messages online, the way he roughs up women?" Fetterman inquired.
He added, "Bernie Sanders needs to apologize to the voters of Maine and to everyone that donated to that train wreck of a campaign."
Currently, the Republican party holds a 53-47 majority in the Senate. Securing the left-leaning Maine Senate seat is considered a vital component of the Democratic strategy to regain control of the chamber. Platner's exit from the race is expected to complicate the electoral calculations for Democrats aiming to achieve a Senate majority.
"Go back under that rock that you came from," Fetterman concluded regarding Platner.
