Federal prosecutors were unsuccessful in their attempt to charge the former White House aide for allegedly making false statements to the House committee investigating the Capitol riot.

Justice Department Fails to Secure Indictment Against Cassidy Hutchinson Over Jan. 6 Testimony

The Justice Department's attempt to indict Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide in the Trump White House, on allegations of providing false testimony to the congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol breach was unsuccessful on Tuesday. Sources indicate that federal prosecutors were unable to secure an indictment.

It remains uncertain whether authorities will pursue another attempt to bring charges against Hutchinson.

Congressional Testimony and Investigation

Hutchinson, who served as a senior assistant to then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, gained significant public attention as a key witness before the House select committee. Her testimony was central to the committee's examination of the events of January 6 and former President Donald Trump's actions related to the 2020 election results.

During a widely broadcast hearing in June 2022, Hutchinson recounted events from January 6, including an account she attributed to another White House official regarding the president's reaction to being informed he could not travel to the Capitol. This specific detail, involving an alleged confrontation within the presidential vehicle, was subsequently disputed by other individuals reportedly familiar with the situation.

At the time, sources indicated that additional evidence might be presented to the grand jury in the subsequent weeks, and that no final determinations had been made regarding potential criminal charges. Reports had also emerged, stating that the Justice Department was investigating Hutchinson concerning possible false statements made to Congress.

The grand jury's decision not to issue an indictment against Hutchinson does not definitively determine the veracity of her congressional testimony. Hutchinson has consistently affirmed that she stands by her previous statements.
