Delta Flight Diverted Twice After Onboard Lavatory Leak Incident, Stranding Passengers
A transatlantic journey from Paris to Seattle became an extended ordeal for 209 passengers when their Delta Air Lines flight experienced a double diversion following a lavatory malfunction.
U.S.·

A Delta Air Lines flight originating in Paris and bound for Seattle was unexpectedly diverted twice, significantly prolonging the travel time for its 209 passengers. The journey, which began on August 13 from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) with Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) as its final destination, encountered its first disruption when a mechanical issue involving an onboard lavatory forced an unscheduled landing in London.
First Diversion to London Heathrow
Delta Flight 81, an Airbus A330-900 carrying 209 passengers and 13 crew members, was en route across the Atlantic when the flight crew reported a mechanical problem related to a lavatory. This prompted the decision to divert the aircraft to London Heathrow Airport (LHR).
As the plane approached Heathrow, the crew declared an emergency with air traffic control. This declaration was made because the aircraft would be conducting an overweight landing, a standard procedure when a plane lands earlier than planned without having consumed enough fuel to reduce its weight to the optimal landing threshold. Despite the emergency status, the airline confirmed that the landing at Heathrow was executed safely and without incident.
Upon arrival in London, Delta maintenance personnel immediately began servicing the Airbus to address the reported lavatory malfunction. The airline stated, "This is not the experience we strive to provide, and we're focused on getting our customers to their destinations as quickly and safely as possible."
Unexpected Detour to New York
Once the necessary maintenance work was completed in London, the aircraft departed Heathrow. However, the passengers' journey was far from over, as they faced an additional, unforeseen detour before reaching their West Coast destination. Instead of proceeding directly from London to Seattle, the flight was rerouted across the Atlantic to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York.
This second change in itinerary was necessitated by the flight crew's available duty time, a regulatory limit designed to ensure pilot and crew rest and safety. At JFK, all passengers were required to clear U.S. Customs before they could continue their journey.
Ultimately, the 209 travelers embarked on an unusual itinerary that took them from Paris to London, then across the Atlantic to New York, before finally completing the last leg to Seattle.
Delta did not provide specific details regarding the exact nature of the mechanical problem with the lavatory or the precise maintenance procedures undertaken to resolve it.
