The National Hockey League witnessed a significant transaction on Friday with the Winnipeg Jets transferring three-time Vezina Trophy winner, Olympic gold medalist, and reportedly soon-to-be Medal of Freedom recipient, Connor Hellebuyck, to the New Jersey Devils.
The seasoned netminder had not seen action this season after requesting a trade during the summer. With the move now finalized, Hellebuyck is preparing to rejoin competitive play and recently addressed the New Jersey media for the first time.
“Sitting at home for so long was getting to me. For myself, I’m just really excited to play hockey again,” Hellebuyck stated on Saturday, as reported by the Associated Press. “I’m joining a very skilled group. They brought me for a certain specific role. I’m really excited to fill that role, not only on the ice but off the ice as well.”
The Devils have commenced their season positively, holding a 7-4-0 record following their victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, a game in which Jake Allen served as goaltender. The addition of a goaltender of Hellebuyck's caliber to the roster could significantly bolster the team's defensive capabilities, potentially making goals a scarce commodity for opposing teams.
Reflecting on Market Differences
For Hellebuyck, the experience of playing in New Jersey will naturally differ from his time in a fervent Canadian hockey market like Winnipeg. This distinction was a topic he was questioned about during his media availability.
“I mean, it’s a catch-22; some people love that,” he remarked when discussing markets where fans might approach players about hockey during personal errands, such as grocery shopping. “Sometimes you just want to be left alone. Canada loves their hockey, and I felt that to the bone, and I loved my time there, and I’ve loved the people I’ve met. Made a lot of good friends and built good relationships there.”
He continued, “So, I can’t say that one is better than the other. I know that I’ve enjoyed both and I’ve experienced both. It’s just one of those things that’s part of hockey culture... they love their hockey, and we love our hockey in our own way, and that should be celebrated.”
Hellebuyck offered a diplomatic response regarding the differing fan cultures. His new team, the Devils, are scheduled to visit Winnipeg on November 10, marking an anticipated return to his former home arena.
