Senator Collins Condemns Democratic Attack Ads, Citing "Outright Lies" in Maine Race

Senator Susan Collins voiced strong disapproval on Sunday regarding what she characterized as a wave of misleading and dishonest attack advertisements launched by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the Democratic Party. The Maine Republican stated she had never witnessed a political campaign featuring "so many outright lies" aimed at her and fellow Republican contenders.

Accusations of a "Schumer Playbook"

Collins specifically accused Democrats of adhering to "Chuck Schumer's playbook," highlighting attack ads that she claimed were strikingly similar to those deployed against other Republican legislators. She cited one particular advertisement that she found "outrageous" and "completely false."

"One of the outrageous, completely false ads against me had to do with Jeffrey Epstein. And it turns out, in talking to two of my colleagues who are in tough races, that they had virtually identical ads run against them. So this is part of Chuck Schumer's playbook," Senator Collins explained.

She further elaborated on her frustration with the nature of the campaign:

"There are a lot of differences between my opponent and me, but I've never seen a campaign with so many outright lies. It's very frustrating," she added.

Collins also suggested that the Democratic strategy was designed to divert attention from local concerns, pushing the focus instead onto broader, more polarizing national political debates.

"It's certainly an attempt by my opponent and Chuck Schumer and their allies to nationalize this race," she asserted.

Emphasizing Bipartisanship and Independence

During discussions about her own campaign, Senator Collins presented herself as a lawmaker committed to bipartisanship, advocating for cooperation across party lines. She argued that the Senate urgently requires more centrist voices, especially as an increasing number of moderates choose to leave Washington.

"Unfortunately, a lot of them have given up and retired or decided they just didn't want to run again. And that's one reason I am running again," she stated, underscoring her commitment to continued service.
"We need more people who are willing to work across party lines. That is really important," she reiterated.

Collins also characterized herself as the "most independent senator on either side of the aisle." She pointed to her extensive voting record, asserting that her decisions are consistently based on her convictions about what is right, rather than being influenced by which party controls the White House or the specific positions of President Donald Trump.

Clarifying Voting Record

Addressing common criticisms regarding her voting habits, Senator Collins challenged a widely circulated statistic about her alignment with the former president.

"There's this phony figure out there that I voted with President Trump 95% of the time. That's based on a sample of only 30% of the votes," she clarified. "If you look at a broader sample of 90% of the vote, that drops significantly to like 72%. And I voted against the president's policies 138 times," she explained.

Despite the challenges, Senator Collins conveyed a sense of optimism regarding her campaign's prospects.

"I'm feeling very optimistic based on the great response I get in visiting communities all over the state," she concluded.
